System Description & Flow Diagram for Commingled Containers and Paper

Andela is introducing a new way to process commingled recyclables! The Andela COSS system will operate with minimum labor and is flexible enough to fit your processing requirements.

Click here to view and optionally print the system flow diagram.

System Infeed - start at the upper right hand corner of the diagram:

The commingled mix of metal, plastic and glass containers or mixed paper is loaded into an in-floor or above ground infeed conveyor.

The commingled material goes up the conveyor and drops onto a sorting belt that goes across a mezzanine with picking stations and a cross-belt magnet. Three bunkers under the mezzanine allow for the accumulation of picked materials and ferrous metals removed with the cross-belt magnet.

On the mezzanine, pickers will remove non-container plastics and debris (plastic bags, cassette tapes, flower pots, paper etc.), aluminum and one grade of plastics as determined by the mix of material. For commingled paper, the pickers will remove
cardboard and one grade of paper from the mixed paper stream.

As material passes under the crossbelt magnet, the ferrous metal is removed as a clean marketable commodity.

At the end of the sorting belt, a diverter chute will direct the commingled containers into the Andela Breaker for further processing or the mixed paper into the baler or bunker.

The Andela Breaker
(Commingled Container Processing)

The Andela Breaker processes the mix of whole containers and the glass is broken down in size, but the plastic, cans and other material pass through in their larger form.

The material flows into the COSS trommel screen separator where all the broken glass and other debris less than 2 1/2" in size falls through the screen.

The mixed plastics, No. 1 through No. 7, goes out the end of the trommel for marketing as a mixed plastic product or as residue depending on the mix of materials and plastic picked on the mezzanine.

The Andela Glass Pulverizer System

The metering surge hopper receives the 2 1/2" minus glass and debris that falls through the COSS trommel along with any externally loaded or recirculated glass for processing through the Andela Glass Pulverizer System.

The glass pulverizer selectively reduces the glass into a glass sand or fine gravel with rounded edges but leaves the other debris in a larger form. As this mix goes through the trommel screen, a glass sand and gravel product is produced as a clean, marketable commodity. The plastic and paper, larger than 3/8" in size, is separated from the glass aggregate.

In Summary

With only two pickers, the ANDELA COSS system will accept and process both commingled containers or commingled paper and produce sorted recyclable commodities. The ferrous metal, aluminum, sorted plastic, mixed plastics, cardboard, sorted paper or mixed paper will be baled and shipped to market. All the glass becomes a pulverized glass aggregate collected in a roll-off or bunker for local use.

The residual material from this system is insignificant and comprised of non-recyclable plastics or small paper resulting in a minimal tipping fee or cost to the recycling operation.

This flow diagram is meant to illustrate the general material flow through an Andela COSS System but is not intended to specify the specific size or configuration of the equipment required for the complete system. Equipment specifications and sizes will vary depending on the location of the equipment, the required processing capacity and a number of other factors. System design services are available to provide a system that will fit your facility and processing requirements.

The Andela COSS system is a new approach to commingled recycling that does not require any manual separation of glass. If this sounds interesting, contact Andela Products, Ltd. at 315-858-0055 to discuss your specific application
